Paper 2011
Janet Kurnatowski Gallery is pleased to present “Paper 2011,” the gallery’s second annual showcase of over 100 works on paper hung in a sophisticated salon-style fashion. Familiar names and newcomers are arranged together in the space, creating commentary through the range of method and media, while all remain true to the intimate spirit that constitutes work on paper.
“Paper 2011” celebrates the many phases of art making. From practical thumbnail studies to bound- less experimentation, the works carry a fresh and personal sensation that is both inviting and relatable. The mixture of framed and unframed gives the walls volume and personality, and creates a natural and suggested visual boundary for the surrounding work. Zippers, plastic mesh, thread, and tape are implemented as drawing devices to form line and shape, while others execute thoughts through more traditional mediums such as graphite, charcoal, watercolor, gouache, and ink.
The refined qualities within the works of Fred Gutzeit, David Ambrose, Mike Nemire, and Marilyn Lerner compliment the uninhibited markings of James Biederman, Joan Thorne, Russell Roberts and Veronika Sheer. The work uniformly displays the inspired impulses that emerge through both controlled and un- charted investigation. Whether by way of meticulous repetition, minimalist marks, or all in between, “Paper 2011” truly exhibits the passion and joy behind making art.
The following is the list of participating artists in the show: Alice Zinnes, Anne Russinof , Art Guerra, Beatrice Wolert, Ben La Rocco, Carol Diamond, Caroline McAu- liffe, Carrie Beckmann, Cathy Diamond, Cecily Kahn, Chris Martin, Corina Larkin, Craig Olson, Cynthia Hartling, David Ambrose, David Rhodes, Deborah Spiroff, Deirdre Swords, Elisa Soliven, Elizabeth Ha- zan, Evelyn Twitchell, Fred Gutzeit, Gae Savannah, Gary Petersen, Gelah Penn, Greg Lindquist, Jackie Meier, James Biederman, James Clark, Jennifer Riley, Joan Thorne, Joanne Freeman, Joe Walentini, Judy Simonian, Julie Gross, Karen Marston, Karla Wozniak, Kate Miles, Katsuhisa Sakai, Kazimira Rachfal, Kim Uchiyama, Kris Chatterson, Kristine Taylor, Kylie Heidenheimer, Laura Newman, Lauren Bakoian, Linda Francis, Loren Munk, Louise Sloane, Malado Baldwin, Mara Held, Margrit Lewczuk, Marilyn Lerner, Mark Dagley, Matt Choberka, Melissa Staiger, Michael Brennan, Michael Randall, Michael Volonakis, Michal Shapiro, Mike Nemire, Nathlie Provosty, Palma Blank, Peter Acheson, Phong Bui, Rebecca Smith, Rene Pierre Allain, Rich Temperio, Rick Briggs, Rob Van Erve, Ron Gorchov, Russell Roberts, Sandra Casti, Sara Klar,Scott Malbaurn, Seren Morey, Shane McAdams, Sheila Rotner, Sherman Sam, Stephen Maine, Steven Alexander, Suejin Jo, Tamara Gonzales, Thornton Willis, Tim Casey, Tony Saunders, Ve- ronika Sheer,Vince Contarino,William Holton,Yvette Cohen
