Janet Kurnatowski is pleased to present new work by James Gilroy, Simple Ain’t Easy. This will be Gilroy’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. The show will run from October 17th till November 16th. There will be an opening reception for the artist it is free and open to the public.
Gilroy uses a palette knife and oil paint to layer and mix colors directly on the canvas to create his forms and he uses brushes to sketch lines to retain drawings within the paintings. “A certain alchemy of color and line can happen, a third thing that emerges when the two elements fuse. This only happens when I manage to get out of my own way, and the paint starts talking back to me. It has its own ideas about the way it wants to look, and it’s a real thrill when that is revealed. If I can maintain the dialog, work it until it’s resolved, I see new music, new colors, and a resonance that wasn’t part of my original intention.” Gilroy lives and works in New York, he studied art at The Art Students League of New York and the New York Phoenix School of Design. His work has been exhibited in New York, Long Island and Brooklyn. Select solo exhibitions include Urban Zen, Sag Harbor, NY, Dactyl Foundation for the Arts & Humanities, NY, Boltax Gallery, Shelter Island, NY, Agama Gallery, NY and 291 Gallery.
