Katsuhisa Sakai • Layers and Gravity
June 5 - June 28, 2015
Opening reception: Friday, June 5th 7-9pm
Janet Kurnatowski is pleased to present "Layers and Gravity", an exhibition of new sculptures by Katsuhisa Sakai. This will be Sakai's third solo show with the gallery. The exhibition runs from June 5 - June 28, 2015. Please join the artist for an opening reception on Friday, June 5th from 7-9pm.
Sakai's earlier wooden sculptures were based on geometric shapes, that could be seen as three-dimensional drawings in space. Around the year 2000, he added stone as a new medium to his sculptures, allowing him to further explore time and space in his work. Currently Sakai approaches this new body of work from a geological point of view. Deep within our planet, when the Earth formed - moving, compressing, twisting and gravity shifting the old and new layers, the structural movement captured Earth's memories. In the same way, Sakai's understanding of gravity, layers and time underlie the wood and stone sculptures found in this show.
Katsuhisa Sakai was born in Japan, he received a BFA from Musashino Art College in Tokyo and a MFA from Yale University, School of Art. Sakai's work includes experimental film, video, drawings and sculpture, shown in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and Tokyo. For additional information or images please contact the gallery.
