Janet Kurnatowski Gallery is pleased to present "WAVE LENGTH", an exhibit of abstraction with works by Emily Berger, Julie Gross, Kim Uchiyama and Joy Walker. The exhibition runs from February 20 - March 22, 2015. Please join the artists for an opening reception on Friday, February 20th from 7-9pm.
Energetic works deliver an emotional impact by blending transparency and opacity in mediums as diverse as acrylic, gouache, oil and watercolor. Instead of using works on paper as studies for later, more developed works, the drawings in this exhibit are crafted to be equal in weight and importance to the paintings.
Julie Gross uses opaque gouache on paper to contrast rhythmic color and form fields based on sine waves or "s" curves. Her flux vs. stasis motif manifests with a sensual voluptuousness via either bifurcation or multiplication of the forms. The flat, non-incidental surface gives weight and stasis to the linear momentum of the colored bands.
Kim Uchiyama's watercolors on paper convey brimming bands of enigmatic light. She employs saturated color to establish an overarching chorus, each band delineating its unique voice. The precise arrangement, like notes of a song, stealthily transfers energy from one moment to the next.
In Emily Berger's oil paintings on wood panel, geometric structure intuitively emerges from a scaffolding of repetitive, deliberate and meditative gesture. She explores the seductive pull of subtly changing brushstroke, color and texture, creating varied yet unified rhythmic movement and a sense of shifting and mysterious light.
Joy Walker presents an intensely uplifting abstraction with combinations of stripes and bands and a bright bounty of acrylic color, often merging photographs with playful expression. The photos anchor the piece with intrigue and possibility distinct to each viewer, a touch of memory in a tornado of jazz.
